Urea and barrier repair, explained

Why urea creams help dry, tight skin recover.

A moisturiser skin already makes

Urea is part of skin's natural moisturising factor, the mix of molecules that keeps the outer layer supple. Dry skin tends to run low on it, which is why tightness and flaking follow.

What the percentage means

At around 5%, urea mainly draws water into the skin and softens it. At 10% and above it also gently loosens rough, flaky build-up, which is why higher strengths are used on elbows, heels and very dry patches.

Apply moisturiser to slightly damp skin to lock in more water.

Pair it well

Urea works well with ceramides and glycerin, which help rebuild the barrier and hold on to water. A mild tingle on very dry or broken skin can happen; if it persists, switch to a lower strength.
